Seward

I had never been to Alaska but recently I had the opportunity to visit the Last Frontier twice within a month! I spent six days exploring the interior of Alaska and then my family and 20 of our family members and friends sailed on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas from Seattle to explore the coastline of Alaska.  Both experiences were awesome!

When visiting the interior of Alaska, I landed in Anchorage and then my group boarded a motorcoach and visited Seward and Talkeetna. We took a cruise through the Kenai Fjords National Park and saw sea lions and otters. Talkeetna has all of the charm that you would expect from an Alaskan town that has a population of just over 1,000 people.  From Talkeetna, we boarded the Alaskan Railway and headed towards Denali National Park. The train ride was full of amazing views and spotted bald eagles and moose during our adventure. I wasn’t in the lucky 30% of visitors who get to view Denali in her fullest.  The clouds were low and the top of the mountain was covered during our visit.  I guess I will just have to go back to Alaska and hopefully my luck changes.  I ended my visit of the interior of Alaska in Fairbanks. It was the end of May when I was there and at 1:00 a.m. it just looked like dusk. There were 3 hours and 4 minutes of “darkness”.  It was cool and eerie at the same time.

Before heading out on our Alaskan cruise, we spent a few days exploring Seattle.  We visited the Space Needle, the gum wall, Chihuly Glass Garden and, of course, Pikes Market. While in Seattle, we also met up with many family members and friends who were going to be joining us on the cruise.  We embarked in Seattle and stopped in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau and Victoria, British Columbia. We learned quickly that the weather in Alaska is unpredictable. We had sun, rain and wind all within the first 24 hours we were aboard.  During our port days we visited totem parks, saw dozens of bald eagles, explored the Mendenhall Glacier, chatted with the locals and ate amazing food.  The Quantum of the Seas is a beautiful ship and has so much to do for every age group.  My teenage sons enjoyed laser tag, bumper cars and basketball while my in-laws enjoyed visiting the bars and lounges.  As a family, we experienced iFly by Ripcord; an incredible controlled skydiving experience.  The Solarium was an indoor space that had windows from floor to ceiling. There were hot tubs, a bar and many loungers to relax and watch for whales. This was my husband’s favorite area of the ship!

Cruising is a great way to travel with large groups.  There are enough activities for each person to do as much or as little as they want and for groups to meet up for trivia or a dance party.  There is time for the kids to explore on their own, parents to relax and time for families to have fun together.  My family loves to cruise and this definitely won’t be our last group cruise.

Alaska was stunning and we only got to see a small portion of the largest state in the USA.  We will definitely be back to explore more of the Last Frontier!
